All are routed through native terrain with minimal earthmoving, and the wind is a constant variable that changes the character of every round. The isolation is part of the appeal -- this part of Nebraska is a long drive from anywhere, and that's exactly what keeps the crowds away.

Bay Harbor Golf Club sits on a limestone bluff above Lake Michigan, with a 27-hole layout offering three nine-hole combinations, the strongest of which is the Links/Quarry pairing. Belvedere Golf Club in Charlevoix is the low-key counterpart -- classic parkland architecture at a fraction of the Bay Harbor rate. The Boyne properties add further depth for groups extending beyond two nights.

A prairie golf road trip anchored by Bully Pulpit at Medora -- a canyon-edge layout with dramatic badlands terrain -- and Links of North Dakota, a pure windswept design in the northwest part of the state. The drives between courses are long, the landscape is unlike anywhere else in the Midwest, and the whole trip rewards golfers who are more interested in unique terrain than convenient logistics.

The Quarry is the visual standout, with granite outcroppings and mining pit remnants woven into the routing. The Legend is the steadier test that holds up on its own when the Quarry is booked out.

Two distinct courses in the Indiana hill country at the same resort, anchored by the Pete Dye Course -- a demanding layout rated one of the hardest public courses in the country. The Donald Ross Course provides the more measured, traditional counterweight for day two. The resort hotel is a 1917 Beaux-Arts property that adds a non-golf layer to what would otherwise be a golf-and-not-much-else situation.

A five-course northern Michigan resort near Gaylord with a par-3 course called Threetops -- nine holes, all played from elevated tees with dramatic elevation drops to the greens below. Threetops runs a competitive evening format that tends to be the social anchor of any group trip. The Masterpiece, Premier, and Signature courses handle the championship rounds during the day.

Chicago's public golf market is anchored by Cog Hill's Dubsdread -- the championship course that hosted the Western Open for decades. Harborside International's Port and Starboard links-style courses and The Glen Club round out a rotation within 45 minutes of downtown. The city infrastructure handles everything that isn't golf without any planning required.

Shangri-La Resort on Grand Lake gives northeast Oklahoma 27 Tom Clark championship holes across three nines, a Golfweek Top 25 par-3 course opened in 2023, and a Tripp Davis day trip 30 minutes away -- all from the same resort base, in a state most buddy trips never think to book.
