High-altitude desert golf in a part of the country most golfers haven't prioritized, anchored by Paako Ridge in the East Mountains and Black Mesa in the Rio Grande valley. The settings are genuinely different from each other, the altitude adds distance to every club, and the rates are notably lower than comparable desert destinations. A three-course Albuquerque-to-Santa Fe routing works cleanly.

Phoenix's golf corridor offers reliable desert sun from November through April, with nearly unlimited public courses within 45 minutes of each other. We-Ko-Pa anchors the shortlist, but the depth of the market means the fourth and fifth rounds don't require settling. The infrastructure -- flights, hotels, restaurants -- is strong enough that the planning is mostly just picking the right course rotation.

Golf in Las Vegas works because the off-course infrastructure is already world-class, so the trip doesn't depend on the courses to carry the evenings. Shadow Creek and Wynn Golf Club set the ceiling on experience and price; Cascata and TPC Las Vegas hold the middle. The rounds are often expensive relative to course quality, but the group trip format fits the city naturally.

Two distinct golf corridors on the same island -- the Kapalua Plantation Course on the northwest coast and the Wailea resort courses on the south shore -- each with strong anchor courses and reliable resort infrastructure. Plantation is the championship layout, home of the Sentry Tournament of Champions, with ocean and mountain views from the back nine. Flying into Kahului puts both within 40 minutes.

Hawaii's most concentrated golf corridor runs along the Kohala Coast lava fields, with Mauna Kea, Mauna Lani North and South, and Hapuna all within 20 miles. Mauna Kea's third hole -- a par-3 over crashing surf on the Pacific -- is among the most photographed holes in the game. The resort infrastructure is strong at both Mauna Kea and Mauna Lani, with Kona as the natural base for a driving-trip format.

Arizona's quieter desert market, anchored by Dove Mountain -- host of the Match Play Championship -- and Ventana Canyon's two Tom Fazio courses in the Santa Catalina Mountains. The courses are strong and the pricing is meaningfully lower than Scottsdale, with similarly good weather from November through April. Works well for groups who want desert golf without the Scottsdale crowd.

The Corridor between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas runs 20 miles of Pacific coastline with some of the densest concentration of oceanfront golf in North America. Quivira and Diamante Dunes are the two strongest courses -- both dramatic, both oceanfront, both priced for the experience. A three-to-four day trip with flights out of most major West Coast cities packages efficiently.

Two anchor courses on opposite sides of the island -- Princeville Makai on the north shore and Poipu Bay on the south -- connected by a 50-minute scenic drive through the center of the island. Princeville Makai is the links-style design with open ocean exposure; Poipu Bay is the LPGA Grand Slam venue with the more polished resort feel. The island is compact enough that neither requires choosing between them.

TPC Dorado Beach on the north coast -- with East and Sugarcane courses on grounds originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. -- is the golf anchor for the island. Royal Isabela on the northwest coast provides the dramatically different alternative: cliff-side links golf with Atlantic Ocean views and a small boutique lodging operation that controls access tightly. A five-day Puerto Rico trip covering both is the format that justifies the flight.

Ko Olina Golf Club on the west side and Turtle Bay Resort's Arnold Palmer Course on the north shore give Oahu two distinct personalities to anchor the trip. Royal Hawaiian Golf Club in Maunawili Valley on the windward side adds a third style: lush valley terrain in a setting that looks nothing like the resort corridors on the west coast. Three rounds, three days, three completely different environments.

Sedona Golf Resort on the mesa above the canyon offers red rock views from nearly every hole -- one of the more visually dramatic resort settings in American golf. The course plays to a genuine challenge and holds up beyond the scenery. Works well as a one-course anchor in a Sedona visit where the hiking, restaurants, and town experience are doing equal work alongside the golf.
