A lakefront Idaho resort with a gimmick that actually works: the Resort Golf Course's 14th hole uses a floating green moored in Lake Coeur d'Alene, accessible by boat for each group. Circling Raven, a 20-minute drive away on the Coeur d'Alene Casino grounds, provides the championship counterpart that gives the trip substance beyond the floating green novelty. Works as a two-course, three-night format.

Red Sky Ranch in Wolcott, Colorado -- about 30 minutes from Vail -- offers two championship courses: the Tom Fazio design and the Greg Norman design, each with a distinct architectural personality at an elevation that produces longer ball flights and softer turf. Aspen Golf Club handles a third round if the group extends west. Aspen itself, 45 minutes away, handles the non-golf portion of the trip with minimal effort required.

A 45-mile public golf corridor, anchored by three genuinely distinct courses: Arrowhead Golf Club's red rock formations in the foothills, Fossil Trace's quarry ruins in Golden, and Riverdale Dunes' links design on the South Platte.
