Horseshoe Bay is a proper golf resort in a setting that most out-of-state visitors do not expect from Texas. The Hill Country lakefront terrain and three on-property Nicklaus Signature designs give the trip a legitimate three-round rotation without leaving the property. The Austin drive is 90 minutes and worth building into the itinerary. Come in spring or fall when the Hill Country is at its best.

The trip experience
Horseshoe Bay Resort in the Texas Hill Country sits about 50 miles northwest of Austin and operates as a complete resort destination built around three Robert Trent Jones Sr. courses that use the lake and hill terrain of the Highland Lakes region. The trip works because the resort consolidates the golf, lodging, and off-course options into a single property while the Hill Country setting gives it a character that Austin's suburban daily-fee courses don't provide. For groups that want a standalone Texas resort trip separate from Barton Creek, Horseshoe Bay is the answer.
Ram Rock is the anchor. Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s design uses the granite outcroppings and elevation changes of the Hill Country with a firmness that reflects his most demanding period of work. The course plays hard in a specific way -- the approach angles are precise, the greens are complex, and the fairways are defined enough that the difference between hitting the fairway and missing it translates directly into difficulty. For groups that want to test their games against a real standard rather than a forgiving resort round, Ram Rock is the course to start with.
"Ram Rock plays hard in a specific way -- the approach angles are precise, the greens are complex, and the difference between hitting the fairway and missing it translates directly into stroke difference."
Slick Rock gives the rotation its most scenic round. The routing along the shores of Lake LBJ puts water in play on multiple holes and gives the course the visual character that most groups associate with the Texas Hill Country lake experience. It's not as demanding as Ram Rock from tee to green, but the lake exposure and the wind off the water make it play variably enough that it earns its slot as the second round in a three-day schedule. Apple Rock rounds out the rotation as the most accessible of the three Jones courses -- shorter and more open than Ram Rock, with a character that suits the afternoon round or the lighter day when the group wants competitive golf without the anchor course's full demands.
Lake LBJ and the surrounding Highland Lakes give the off-course hours real options. The lakefront setting supports boating, fishing, and waterfront dining, and the resort's marina infrastructure handles those activities in a way that makes them available without requiring outside coordination. Marble Falls and the surrounding Hill Country towns give groups willing to drive 20-30 minutes access to small-town Texas dining and retail that's worth exploring.
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is about 50 miles east, making the drive manageable for groups flying into Texas. The Hill Country drive through Marble Falls and the lake country sets the tone for the trip well before the resort property comes into view.
"Austin-Bergstrom is about 50 miles east, and the Hill Country drive through Marble Falls and the lake country sets the tone for the trip before the resort property comes into view."
Three rounds covering all three Jones courses is the natural structure for a two-night stay. A second round on Ram Rock is easy to justify for groups that want to improve on a first-round score.
It's the course that rewards familiarity with its specific approach demands more than the other two, and the distance from first-round performance to second-round performance on Ram Rock is typically more dramatic than on the companion courses. Groups based in Austin who want a Hill Country trip without Barton Creek's full resort commitment will find Horseshoe Bay the most logistically straightforward option in the region. The 50-mile drive on Highway 71 west from Austin is easy, and the transition from the suburban corridor to the Hill Country happens quickly enough that the group arrives feeling like it has genuinely gone somewhere.
Side trips & bonus golf
Austin is 90 minutes east and the obvious extension for any Horseshoe Bay trip. The city has moved well beyond its live music identity and now has a restaurant and bar scene that competes with any mid-sized American city. Sixth Street and Rainey Street are the two main entertainment corridors. Rainey Street in particular has evolved into a better collection of bars with outdoor space that suits a golf group.
Marble Falls is the closest town to the resort and worth a morning walk for coffee and a proper Texas breakfast. Blue Bonnet Cafe has been serving breakfast since 1929 and the line is worth it if you start early. The town sits on the lake with a small waterfront park that provides a low-key evening option.
Fort Martin Scott near Fredericksburg is about 45 minutes from Horseshoe Bay and anchors a good day trip through the Hill Country wine corridor. The area around Fredericksburg has developed a genuine wine industry over the past decade, with Becker Vineyards and Driftwood Estate being the most visited. This is better suited as a non-golf day for mixed groups.
If Summit Rock at Horseshoe Bay is on anyone's radar, that is the members-only Jack Nicklaus Signature course named best new course in America by Golf Digest. Non-members cannot access it through a normal stay. A club membership or a guest invitation from a member is the only path.
Is this trip right for your group?
- ✓Book this trip if you want a true on-property resort experience where you never need a car once you arrive.
- ✓Book this trip if three courses by the same legendary architect in one setting appeals to your golf sensibility.
- ✓Book this trip if Hill Country terrain with genuine elevation changes and lake views is a change from flat resort golf.
- ✓Book this trip if Austin access as an extension adds nightlife or food options the group wants without requiring a long flight.
- ✓Book this trip if a 3-4 day compact golf trip is the target and you want high rounds-per-day efficiency.
- ✓Book this trip if Ram Rock has been on your Texas bucket list and you want to finally play one of the toughest resort courses in the state.
- ✗Skip this trip if nationally ranked Top 100 courses are the requirement. Horseshoe Bay does not have a layout on the national lists outside the members-only Summit Rock.
- ✗Skip this trip if summer heat is a hard no. Temperatures in June, July, and August regularly hit 100 degrees in the Hill Country.
- ✗Skip this trip if you want a beach or coastal destination. The lake is beautiful but it is a freshwater lake, not an ocean backdrop.
- ✗Skip this trip if your group needs nightlife on property. Horseshoe Bay is a quiet resort town and Marble Falls closes early.
When to go
- March through May delivers the best combination of temperature, course conditions, and full resort amenity availability. Wildflowers bloom across the Hill Country in April, which adds visual character to drives between Marble Falls and Austin.
- Golf packages in spring run the highest rates of the year but include unlimited play that amortizes well over a 3-night stay.
- Ram Rock books out on spring weekends 3-4 weeks ahead. Book tee times at the same time you book lodging.
- October is a co-equal peak month with spring. Fall color in the Hill Country is subtle but temperatures are the most consistent of the year.
- September begins the fall transition and is often overlooked. Rates drop from summer but conditions improve as heat recedes.
- November can deliver excellent playing conditions through Thanksgiving week before winter rain patterns set in.
- February is the shoulder entry to spring. Temperatures can be unpredictable but the chance of frost is low and the courses are operational.
- Should season rates at the resort run 15-25 percent below spring peak and 20-30 percent below fall peak.

How tee times and lodging actually work
- 1Book golf as part of a resort package for best valueUnlimited play packages often cost less per round than booking individually, especially for stays of 3 or more nights.
- 2Shuttle service runs on a scheduleThe resort shuttle to all three courses runs on a set schedule. Confirm shuttle times before planning early tee times or you may need to drive yourself.
- 3Ram Rock books fastest in spring and fallReserve Ram Rock as early as possible. It fills on weekends during the March-May and October windows.
- 4Course access requires resort stayAll three RTJ Sr. courses are private to resort guests and club members. You cannot access them without being on property.
- 5Summit Rock is not available to resort guestsThe Jack Nicklaus Signature course is members-only. Do not plan an itinerary expecting to play it without a member invitation.
Common mistakes
- !Booking only two courses when three are availableThe resort packages are priced for unlimited play. Not playing all three courses on a 3-night stay leaves value on the table.
- !Underestimating Ram RockMultiple reviews call it the hardest resort course in Texas. Groups that normally play at scratch or above should still expect to be challenged. Mid-handicappers should bring extra balls.
- !Planning summer heat rounds without early tee times7am starts in July are manageable. 10am starts in July are genuinely uncomfortable and affect pace and enjoyment.
- !Not asking about the shuttle schedule at check-inThe resort is spread across a large property. Walking to courses is not practical. Knowing the shuttle timing prevents missed tee times.
- !Overlooking the Apple Rock back nineThe front nine at Apple Rock is solid, but holes 10, 11, and 12 on the back nine are among the most scenic holes in Texas. Plan your round pace to not rush through the back.
