Horseshoe Bay is a proper golf resort in a setting that most out-of-state visitors do not expect from Texas. The Hill Country terrain provides genuine elevation changes, the courses are in solid condition, and the on-property experience is self-contained enough that you do not need to leave for 3-4 days. Ram Rock is the must-play. If you only have time for two courses, add Apple Rock for the lake views on the back nine.

The trip experience
Horseshoe Bay Resort sits 90 minutes northwest of Austin on the shores of Lake LBJ in the Texas Hill Country, and the case for the trip is straightforward: three courses by Robert Trent Jones Sr. on the same property, all accessible on foot from the resort hotel, in terrain that most out-of-state visitors do not expect from Texas. The Hill Country delivers genuine elevation changes, cedar-and-limestone landscapes, and lake views that anchor the setting in a way that flat Texas resort golf cannot.
Ram Rock is the reason to book ahead. A slope rating of 137 from the back tees reflects the combination of narrow fairways, rock outcroppings in the landing zones, and forced carries over limestone arroyos that require a strategic plan on most holes. It is the most demanding of the three and the one most groups underestimate on arrival. Schedule Ram Rock fresh, not after two prior rounds -- the course does not reward fatigue.
"Ram Rock carries a slope rating of 137 with rock outcroppings in landing zones and forced carries over limestone arroyos -- the most demanding of the three and the one most groups underestimate on arrival."
Slick Rock is the showpiece. The Million Dollar Hole -- a par-3 with a 35-foot waterfall cascading down to a green set above Lake LBJ -- is the kind of feature that ends up in every photo from the trip. The layout itself is more accessible than Ram Rock, with wider fairways and a routing that lets the lake views carry the experience on several holes. Playing Slick Rock and Apple Rock in the same day is the most common structure and covers two distinct experiences: waterfall drama and lake panoramas.
"Slick Rock's Million Dollar Hole plays over a 35-foot waterfall to a green perched above Lake LBJ -- the kind of hole that justifies a two-night stay on its own."
Apple Rock delivers the most sustained lake views of the three. The routing along the Lake LBJ shoreline gives multiple holes unobstructed water exposure and a visual continuity that makes it the most scenically consistent round of the trip. Green fees across all three courses run $90 to $160 depending on season and day of week -- a reasonable value for the quality of resort golf in a genuinely distinctive setting.
Legends Golf Club at Horseshoe Bay is a fourth on-resort option -- shorter and more accessible, best as a warm-up or light round for groups who have already played all three main courses.
Austin-Bergstrom International is 90 minutes southeast on US-183 N, which makes this a practical driving trip for Texas-based groups and a short connect for out-of-state travelers flying into Austin. The drive through the Hill Country approaching Marble Falls is worth the road time on its own -- the limestone escarpment at the edge of the Edwards Plateau is one of the better drives in Texas. Reserve tee times at least two to three weeks out for weekend mornings; Ram Rock fills fastest and runs on a tighter booking window than the other two courses.
Marble Falls, the nearest town, has enough restaurants and a working downtown for group evenings off-property. The Lakeway corridor and Lake Travis area, 45 minutes east toward Austin, expands the dining and nightlife options for groups willing to drive. A round at Lakeway Resort or one of the Lake Travis public courses is a practical add-on for groups arriving a day early.
Side trips & bonus golf
Austin is 90 minutes east and the obvious extension for any Horseshoe Bay trip. The city has moved well beyond its live music identity and now has a restaurant and bar scene that competes with any mid-sized American city. Sixth Street and Rainey Street are the two main entertainment corridors. Rainey Street in particular has evolved into a better collection of bars with outdoor space that suits a golf group.
Marble Falls is the closest town to the resort and worth a morning walk for coffee and a proper Texas breakfast. Blue Bonnet Cafe has been serving breakfast since 1929 and the line is worth it if you start early. The town sits on the lake with a small waterfront park that provides a low-key evening option.
Fort Martin Scott near Fredericksburg is about 45 minutes from Horseshoe Bay and anchors a good day trip through the Hill Country wine corridor. The area around Fredericksburg has developed a genuine wine industry over the past decade, with Becker Vineyards and Driftwood Estate being the most visited. This is better suited as a non-golf day for mixed groups.
If Summit Rock at Horseshoe Bay is on anyone's radar, that is the members-only Jack Nicklaus Signature course named best new course in America by Golf Digest. Non-members cannot access it through a normal stay. A club membership or a guest invitation from a member is the only path.
Is this trip right for your group?
- ✓Book this trip if you want a true on-property resort experience where you never need a car once you arrive.
- ✓Book this trip if three courses by the same legendary architect in one setting appeals to your golf sensibility.
- ✓Book this trip if Hill Country terrain with genuine elevation changes and lake views is a change from flat resort golf.
- ✓Book this trip if Austin access as an extension adds nightlife or food options the group wants without requiring a long flight.
- ✓Book this trip if a 3-4 day compact golf trip is the target and you want high rounds-per-day efficiency.
- ✓Book this trip if Ram Rock has been on your Texas bucket list and you want to finally play one of the toughest resort courses in the state.
- ✗Skip this trip if nationally ranked Top 100 courses are the requirement. Horseshoe Bay does not have a layout on the national lists outside the members-only Summit Rock.
- ✗Skip this trip if summer heat is a hard no. Temperatures in June, July, and August regularly hit 100 degrees in the Hill Country.
- ✗Skip this trip if you want a beach or coastal destination. The lake is beautiful but it is a freshwater lake, not an ocean backdrop.
- ✗Skip this trip if your group needs nightlife on property. Horseshoe Bay is a quiet resort town and Marble Falls closes early.
When to go
- March through May delivers the best combination of temperature, course conditions, and full resort amenity availability. Wildflowers bloom across the Hill Country in April, which adds visual character to drives between Marble Falls and Austin.
- Golf packages in spring run the highest rates of the year but include unlimited play that amortizes well over a 3-night stay.
- Ram Rock books out on spring weekends 3-4 weeks ahead. Book tee times at the same time you book lodging.
- October is a co-equal peak month with spring. Fall color in the Hill Country is subtle but temperatures are the most consistent of the year.
- September begins the fall transition and is often overlooked. Rates drop from summer but conditions improve as heat recedes.
- November can deliver excellent playing conditions through Thanksgiving week before winter rain patterns set in.
- February is the shoulder entry to spring. Temperatures can be unpredictable but the chance of frost is low and the courses are operational.
- Should season rates at the resort run 15-25 percent below spring peak and 20-30 percent below fall peak.
- June through August is hot. Temperatures regularly hit 100 degrees by 1pm. A 7am tee time to finish by 11am is the only viable strategy.
- The lake remains a strong afternoon activity in summer. Boat rentals, kayaking, and swimming fill the time between rounds efficiently.
- Summer rates are the lowest of the year. A budget-focused group that can handle early morning rounds and afternoon lake activities gets reasonable value.
- Bentgrass greens at Apple Rock are more vulnerable in summer heat. Conditions on the greens can be softer and slower than spring peak.

How tee times and lodging actually work
- 1Book golf as part of a resort package for best valueUnlimited play packages often cost less per round than booking individually, especially for stays of 3 or more nights.
- 2Shuttle service runs on a scheduleThe resort shuttle to all three courses runs on a set schedule. Confirm shuttle times before planning early tee times or you may need to drive yourself.
- 3Ram Rock books fastest in spring and fallReserve Ram Rock as early as possible. It fills on weekends during the March-May and October windows.
- 4Course access requires resort stayAll three RTJ Sr. courses are private to resort guests and club members. You cannot access them without being on property.
- 5Summit Rock is not available to resort guestsThe Jack Nicklaus Signature course is members-only. Do not plan an itinerary expecting to play it without a member invitation.
Common mistakes
- !Booking only two courses when three are availableThe resort packages are priced for unlimited play. Not playing all three courses on a 3-night stay leaves value on the table.
- !Underestimating Ram RockMultiple reviews call it the hardest resort course in Texas. Groups that normally play at scratch or above should still expect to be challenged. Mid-handicappers should bring extra balls.
- !Planning summer heat rounds without early tee times7am starts in July are manageable. 10am starts in July are genuinely uncomfortable and affect pace and enjoyment.
- !Not asking about the shuttle schedule at check-inThe resort is spread across a large property. Walking to courses is not practical. Knowing the shuttle timing prevents missed tee times.
- !Overlooking the Apple Rock back nineThe front nine at Apple Rock is solid, but holes 10, 11, and 12 on the back nine are among the most scenic holes in Texas. Plan your round pace to not rush through the back.
