October Is Not a Debate

October is the best month for American golf. The argument requires no setup: temperatures are in the 60s across the Midwest, Southeast, and Pacific Northwest. Fall foliage in Michigan, the Carolinas, and the Mountain West is at peak. The summer crowds have gone. The courses are in autumn condition, which at sand-based properties means firmer and faster. The days are shorter, which means morning tee times produce afternoon light that August cannot match.

If your group has any flexibility in when to take the annual trip, October is the answer. Here is where to go.

Bandon Dunes. October at Bandon is defined by storm windows: days of perfect coast weather alternating with hours of rain and wind. The links courses play harder when the weather moves in, which is the point. Book late October. The summer crowds are gone by Columbus Day and the courses are at their most Scottish.

Pinehurst Area and the Sandhills. October is peak season in the Sandhills for a specific reason: the air temperature drops below 75, the pine straw is thick on the ground, and the courses that bake in August come back to life. Pinehurst, Pine Needles, Mid Pines, and the surrounding properties are all at their best from mid-October through the end of November.

Bend, Oregon. The courses in Central Oregon play through October with conditions that are ideal: dry, clear, temperatures in the low 60s. Pronghorn, Tetherow, and Crosswater are all available. The Cascade Range backdrop in fall color, against a clear sky and firm fairways, is as visually dramatic as any golf setting in the country.

Big Cedar Lodge, Missouri. October is when the Ozarks make their argument. The mountain and forest setting turns the property into something that reads as dramatically different from the July version. Top of the Rock, Payne's Valley, and Buffalo Ridge are all operating at full capacity in October, and the post-round experience at the lodge property is at its best when the air is cool and the fire pits are lit.

Arcadia Bluffs, Michigan. The Michigan golf season closes in October and the month is the best argument for getting there before the window shuts. The bluff courses above Lake Michigan in autumn color are the most beautiful golf setting in the Midwest, and the rates drop as the season winds down. Book the second week of October. The weather is still reliable and the courses are still open.

The One You're Skipping

Las Vegas in October is excellent: 75 degrees, low humidity, and the full roster of desert courses available at near-summer rates before the fall spike. It belongs on the list if your group wants non-golf infrastructure alongside the rounds. It belongs lower than the destinations above if the golf is the primary consideration.

October has enough slots for every type of trip. The question is not whether to go but where to go first.
